White House Describes Alaska Summit as Listening Session

(MENAFN) The White House sought to moderate expectations for the upcoming summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing the engagement as a "listening exercise" for the U.S. leader.

The meeting, set to take place later this week, is being presented as a step toward gaining insights rather than delivering immediate results.

Press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the summit will occur in Anchorage, the most populous city in Alaska, this Friday.

According to Leavitt, the president intends to set a "goal" of being able to "walk away with a better understanding of how we can end this war."

Leavitt emphasized to the press at the White House that "only one party that's involved in this war is going to be present," clarifying that the primary purpose of the meeting is for the president to gain a clearer and deeper understanding of possible paths to peace.

She noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will not be participating in the summit.

The spokesperson further highlighted that the meeting is taking place at Putin's request, not initiated by the American side.

The direct discussions between the two leaders will represent the first in-person exchange between a sitting U.S. and Russian president since June 2021, when Putin met then-U.S. President Joe Biden in Geneva.

Additionally, this encounter marks a historic occasion, as it will be the first time a Russian president visits Alaska since the territory was transferred from the Russian Empire to the United States in 1867.
