Key Europe, U.S Leaders Agree on Five Principles for Russia Talks
During a joint press briefing with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin, Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s indispensable role in any peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict with Russia. He stated that all matters related to Ukraine should be addressed solely with Ukraine and urged preparations for a trilateral dialogue including Ukraine, Russia, and the United States.
Highlighting the urgency of ending hostilities, Zelensky called for a ceasefire and robust security guarantees for Ukraine’s sovereignty. He further warned that tougher sanctions should be imposed on Russia if it rejects a ceasefire agreement.
Zelensky also revealed that he and Chancellor Merz participated in a video conference on Wednesday with U.S. President Donald Trump, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, among others.
Notably, Trump is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska, a meeting that could shape the future of the conflict.
