U.S. Capture of Maduro Threatens “Chaos and Injustice”
Speaking at an emergency UN Security Council session on Monday, Nebenzia criticized Washington’s military action against the Latin American nation, saying it reveals “the world order the US wants to build” and “horrifies even the staunchest Atlanticists.”
The operation took place on Saturday, when the US reportedly invaded oil-rich Venezuela, abducted Maduro and his wife, and transported them to a US warship before flying them to New York. They appeared in court Monday facing drug-trafficking conspiracy charges. Upon entering a not-guilty plea, Maduro declared, “I am a decent man!”
Prior to the raid, Maduro had accused Washington of aiming to seize Venezuela’s natural wealth. On Sunday, US President Donald Trump openly said the goal was to “run” the Latin American nation so that “we can take advantage of the economics of what they have.”
Nebenzia denounced the US move as “international banditry,” stating that the pursuit of “hegemonistic ambitions in Latin America” and the quest for “unlimited control over natural resources” fuels a return to neo-colonialism and imperialism.
“The bell is already tolling” for every UN member and the future of the organization itself, Nebenzia warned, urging the world to unite against Washington’s aggressive foreign policy. He added that ignoring the US threat would amount to condoning violations of international law and a disregard for “civilized” conduct globally.
Russia, along with other BRICS nations, condemned the US actions, demanding Maduro’s immediate release and expressing solidarity with the Venezuelan people.
In contrast, responses from Western countries have been measured. EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas called for “restraint” and adherence to the UN Charter. A joint statement later issued by all EU member states except Hungary avoided taking a definitive stance on the US operation.
