U.S., India Locked in Active Trade Negotiations

(MENAFN) Washington and New Delhi remain locked in "active engagement" over commercial negotiations, America's newly appointed envoy to India confirmed Monday.

"Many of you have asked me for an update on the ongoing trade deal negotiations. Both sides continue to actively engage. In fact, the next call on trade will occur tomorrow," Ambassador Sergio Gor announced in New Delhi following his official assumption of duties.

He further emphasized: "India is the world's largest nation … It's not an easy task to get this across the finish line, but we are determined to get there and while trade is very important for our relationship."

These diplomatic efforts follow the collapse of trade agreement discussions between New Delhi and Washington last year, which triggered the Trump administration's decision to impose elevated duties on Indian merchandise.

The Trump administration levied a 50% tariff against Indian imports, driven partially by India's ongoing procurement of Russian petroleum despite the Ukraine conflict.

Commercial dialogue between both nations restarted last September when US Assistant Trade Representative Brendan Lynch conducted consultations with Indian government representatives in New Delhi.

A potential agreement faced postponement because Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi failed to place a telephone call to US President Donald Trump, according to US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick—an assertion New Delhi has categorically denied.
