Trump Says Iran's New Leadership Sought Ceasefire
"Iran's new regime president, much less radicalized and far more intelligent than his predecessors, has just asked the United States of America for a ceasefire," Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.
Washington would weigh the request solely once the strategic waterway is "open, free, and clear," he stated, issuing a stark warning that the US would otherwise press on with its strikes against Iran "into oblivion or, as they say, back to the stone ages" until that threshold is met.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei flatly dismissed Trump's assertion, maintaining that the notion of Tehran soliciting a ceasefire bears no resemblance to reality.
U.S. media, citing three US officials, reported that back-channel discussions are already in motion regarding a potential ceasefire arrangement tied to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Those officials indicated that Trump was actively exploring the prospect with advisers both within and beyond his administration, though they cautioned that the path to a concrete agreement remained uncertain. Notably, sources did not clarify whether the talks were being conducted in direct contact with Iran or routed through intermediaries such as Pakistan.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had previously drawn a careful distinction, stating that any existing contacts with the US do not rise to the level of formal negotiations, but are confined to the exchange of messages — whether directly or through regional go-betweens.
Trump has consistently characterised Iran's current leadership as "much more reasonable" than those who came before, telling media earlier this week that the conflict was "coming to an end" and that the US had achieved "total regime change." He further disclosed that Washington had established contact with Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf.
