County Election Board Joins National Poll Worker Recruitment Day
CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (August 7, 2026) – The Carteret County Board of Elections is asking local residents to help with elections by serving at local voting sites. The County is teaming up with the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to celebrate National Poll Worker Recruitment Day on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026. With the General Election coming up this fall, the Board needs local voters to sign up as precinct officials.
The Board needs about 210 precinct officials to make sure all 26 voting sites have enough staff. Precinct officials play a key role in keeping local elections safe, smooth, and fair for everyone.
“This National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, we encourage you to make a difference in our community by signing up to serve,” said Caitlin Sabadish, Carteret County Board of Elections Director. “Serving as a precinct official provides an opportunity to see how elections are conducted while joining your friends, neighbors, and coworkers in providing an important service to our community.”
Precinct officials handle many tasks on Election Day. They set up the equipment, welcome voters, check registrations, hand out ballots, and show people how to use the voting machines.
Working on Election Day takes a full day. Precinct officials start at 5:30 a.m. and finish around 8:30 p.m. on Election Day. Officials must also finish about eight hours of training at the Board of Elections office in Beaufort before Election Day. They will also need to help set up their voting location the day before the election.
Precinct officials can choose to get paid or serve as volunteers. To sign up, you must be a registered voter in Carteret County and fill out basic hiring forms. Applications are ready online or in person at the Board of Elections office.
The EAC started National Poll Worker Recruitment Day in 2020 to thank precinct officials and encourage more people to step up and serve.
