Puerto Rico National Guard joins fifth annual "Pink Day" breast cancer awareness walk through Guaynabo

__GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico — __Puerto Rico National Guard leadership joined the Susan G. Komen Puerto Rico foundation for "Pink Day," the fifth annual breast cancer awareness walk, Oct. 16, 2026, marking the event's fourth time taking to the streets, as participants wound through a commercial district here. Lybia Grisselle Vientós, president of the foundation's Puerto Rico board of directors, was among those in attendance.

U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Carlos G. Torres Febus, the land component commander for the Puerto Rico Army National Guard, said the walk is meant to raise awareness of a disease that touches communities in Puerto Rico and around the world.

"What we're looking for is for people to become aware that this disease affects many people in our country and throughout the world, and what we want is to make them visible so they aren't forgotten," Torres Febus said, speaking in Spanish.

Torres Febus said the cause carries personal weight for the Puerto Rico National Guard, a force of nearly 8,000 Soldiers and Airmen.

"As the National Guard, we are part of the people of Puerto Rico and part of our community. Within our force, every year we receive news that one of our members is battling this scourge of cancer," Torres Febus said. "So it's of the utmost importance for us, not only for this effort within our community, but also to do it for our Soldiers — so they know we haven't forgotten them, and that through this difficult process, when they get sick with cancer, we'll be there for them, to help and assist them and their families."

Torres Febus closed his remarks by thanking everyone who turned out to walk and voicing hope for continued medical progress against the disease.

"Every day we find good news, if not a cure, for this illness in its different forms," he said. "And the hope is that one day this will no longer be a disease that afflicts the people of Puerto Rico and the world so much."
